Iron Horse

Iron Horse is an enchanting, family-owned, working winery, offering a genuine experience of wine country. The winery is a cluster of rustic redwood barn-style buildings at the end of a meandering, one-lane road; on a hill overlooking undulating hills of grape vines. The “Tasting Room” is outdoors, offering a stunning view all the way across Sonoma County to Mount St. Helena. The tasting room team is especially warm and welcoming and a must-visit winery within the beautiful Green Valley of the Russian River Valley. Tastings are by appointment.

Iron Horse owner and wine pioneer Joy Sterling and her team believe in equality; Iron Horse’s Rainbow Cuvée was featured at annual White House LGBT events in June 2014 and 2015. And they have crafted wines for Equality Vines, including: 2008 Love Wins Cuvée, 2013 Love Wins Cuvée, 2013 Love Wins Blanc de Noirs, 2014 Love Wins Cuvée.

Producing exclusively estate-bottled still and sparkling wines with a distinct “sense of place”, they are specific to the Green Valley of the Russian River Valley AVA, and as a result, their wines are elegant, bright, focused, highly nuanced, and silky smooth. The estate was named after a railroad stop which crossed the property in the 1890s. Winemaker Rodney Strong rediscovered it as a vineyard site in 1970, planting the original 55 acres of Chardonnay and 55 acres of Pinot Noir. The logo, the rampant horse on a weathervane, came from a 19th century weathervane unearthed during construction. The first Sparkling Wines were vintage 1980.
